Although Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful video games of all time, there are quite a few stand-out characters that fans would like to see in future titles. Of course, there’s always the possibility that we never see these characters again, but fans can dream, can’t they?

GTA V is a new game in the GTA universe, taking place in the year 2021. The game features over 500 characters, but today we’ll be looking at the 10 best characters. This is based purely on their personality and how fun they are to play as.

There are two major types of video game characters in the Grand Theft Auto series: playable ones, like Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, and non-playable ones, like Franklin and Michael. (It’s worth noting that the Grand Theft Auto IV website lists the stats for each character in the game, so this list of characters and their in-game stats is unofficial.) A lot of players only play the playable characters in the Grand Theft Auto series, but there are plenty of fans of the game who prefer the non-playable characters, too.

Rockstar Games’ flagship Grand Theft Auto franchise has produced a slew of memorable characters throughout the years. While some of the playable characters are more simple, the majority of them are responsible for the success of their own games.

Grand Theft Auto is about the people and their lives, not simply driving about and running down innocent bystanders. Even the most cold-blooded murderers in this series generally have redeeming qualities, or at the very least something that makes them seem less terrifying than they would be in real life.

In this list, I’ll rate the greatest Grand Theft Auto characters and explain why they’re so amazing. I’ll go through their backstories, their influence on the franchise, and some of the reasons why players appreciate (or hate) them. Sounds like a good idea, right? Let’s get this party started!

The Top 10 GTA Characters in Order

Let’s start at #10 and work our way down to the greatest of the best GTA characters!

Lee Huang (GTA: Chinatown Wars)

Huang Lee Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Huang Lee is a one-of-a-kind protagonist, since he is one of the few from a rich family. We don’t notice poverty problems in Lee as we see in most of the other characters. This does, however, enable us to see him grow as a person as the story unfolds. However, he doesn’t think there’s been as much character development as most fans would want.

After being assaulted and having his family sword taken, Lee’s journey in Chinatown Wars starts. The narrative centers on his journey to locate the individuals who assaulted him and recover the sword, which concludes with him facing his uncle, who was ultimately responsible for his attack and his father’s murder.

Johnny Klebitz is a well-known musician (GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned)

Johnny Klebitz is one of the most sympathetic characters in Grand Theft Auto. He originally appears in GTA IV’s The Lost and the Damned expansion. He was only playable once in the series, although he made an appearance in GTA V as well.

Johnny’s story is sad, as he went from being one of The Lost MC’s most prominent members to being splattered on the sole of Trevor Phillips’ foot in Grand Theft Auto V. He spent the most of The Lost and the Damned attempting to unite his gang and resolve problems between himself and his previous boss, Billy Grey. He had succumbed to meth addiction and had become a shadow of his former self by the time GTA V took place five years later.

Claude is a Frenchman (Grand Theft Auto III)

Claude is the next character on our list of the greatest GTA characters.

Grand Theft Auto III’s mute protagonist is Claude. He has extremely little personality since he doesn’t say anything during the tale. However, this is one of the major reasons I like Claude’s company. He can be whatever the player wants him to be, and despite the fact that he doesn’t talk, I believe he has some kind of personality.

In GTA III, Claude’s narrative starts following a botched bank heist in which his girlfriend betrays him. Claude works for different bosses and gangs throughout the narrative in order to track down his ex-girlfriend and get vengeance on her. In GTA: San Andreas, which takes place nine years earlier, Claude appears as a minor character.

Vercetti, Tommy (GTA: Vice City)

Tommy Vercetti was the forerunner of what GTA characters will become over time. He was the first protagonist with a distinct personality, owing to the use of voice lines. Tommy may not have been the greatest protagonist in the series, but he was unquestionably essential.

Tommy’s tale is set in Vice City in 1986. He has just been freed from jail at the start of the narrative, and he is immediately sent to Vice City to grow his boss’s drug trade. Tommy spends the remainder of the narrative attempting to acquire the money to pay back his employer and take over Vice City for himself when a drug transaction turns into an ambush.

Victor Vance is a character in the film Victor Vance (GTA: Vice City Stories)

Victor Vance is another one of the most sympathetic characters in Grand Theft Auto. He didn’t enter the drug trade for the pleasure of it or because he enjoys violence; instead, he enlisted because of a corrupt army sergeant. Vance enlisted in the army to assist his sergeant carry narcotics and earn money for his brother’s asthma treatment. Vance started working in the bigger criminal industry when things went bad and he was thrown out of the army.

Vance is murdered early on in GTA: Vice City after a botched drug transaction. His brother spends the majority of the game’s narrative seeking vengeance, and he eventually succeeds. Vance isn’t a cold-blooded murderer, and he’s one of the more sympathetic characters in the Grand Theft Auto series.

De Santa, Michael (Grand Theft Auto V)

Michael De Santa Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Michael De Santa is one of three playable characters in Grand Theft Auto V, and although he isn’t my favorite (we’ll get to that later), he is one of my favorites. Because of his family and everyday difficulties, Michael is relatable, which is unusual in this series. Unlike many other characters, Michael is already retired from crime when we first meet him. We witness his tumultuous return to this lifestyle as he reunites with old partners and adversaries throughout the narrative.

What makes Michael such an intriguing figure is that he is never really shown as a “nice” guy, but we yet want for him to succeed. He has a family, ambitions, and all the money in the world, yet he still finds himself back in the criminal underworld. Michael’s tale is sad in many respects, yet it’s still entertaining.

Trevor Philips is a writer and a musician (Grand Theft Auto V)

Trevor Philips Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Trevor Philips is a fascinating and popular GTA character for one simple reason: he’s completely crazy. Trevor is the craziest character in the whole series, and his actions reflect this. Even moving from another character to Trevor is an adventure, since he’s usually constantly in the middle of something.

Trevor is, without a doubt, the most memorable character in the series. His character growth, on the other hand, is where he loses some points. Trevor remains the same throughout the game. He begins the tale as a crazy madman and ends it in the same way. He also has few relatable characteristics and is only liked because he is entertaining to play. He is, however, a lot of fun to play.

Carl Johnson is a well-known figure in the (GTA: San Andreas)

Carl Johnson Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Carl Johnson has long been a popular character, as shown by the many memes featuring him and allusions to him in subsequent GTA games. It’s hardly surprising that he’s so beloved, given that San Andreas was such a significant step forward for the franchise. Carl’s tale starts when he returns to Los Santos for the burial of his mother, who was killed in a drive-by shooting. He reunites with his gang and family members to reclaim the city, and while doing so, he becomes engaged in a variety of enterprises and professions.

CJ was a very important character in the series. Since the release of San Andreas, Rockstar has been developing characters with similar growth and backstories, and it seems that they will continue to do so for years to come. And, based on the memes that have surrounded him, it doesn’t seem like the game’s fans will forget about him very soon.

Clinton, Franklin (Grand Theft Auto V)

Franklin Clinton Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Who is the most memorable character in Grand Theft Auto V? Franklin, my personal favorite protagonist, receives this distinction.

Because of his relatability, Franklin is considered one of the greatest GTA 5 characters. Franklin begins as a minor crook attempting to earn enough money to get by, then rises up the criminal ranks to live a lavish lifestyle. While I can’t connect to the act of rising from the bottom to the top of the criminal underworld, it does provide for a more relatable narrative arc than the typical GTA protagonist.

Franklin is one of the most distinctive characters in the series, from his in-game special talent to the relationships he finds himself in. In the context of the story, even his moral faults are readily ignored since he never comes off as malevolent. Franklin is one of the most popular characters among fans, and for good reason.

Niko Bellic is a Croatian musician (Grand Theft Auto IV)

Niko Bellic Image courtesy of Rockstar Games

Who is the most well-rounded GTA character? It’s time for Niko Bellic to take the top spot on our list of the greatest GTA characters.

Niko Bellic is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto III, considered the finest and most tragic of the series. He comes to America in the hopes of escaping the life of crime he was living in Europe, but he soon learns that no matter where he goes, he would never be able to escape it. Niko’s tale is an eye-opening depiction of the “American ideal” and all of its flaws, demonstrating that no matter where you live, you can’t always escape your past.

Niko is my favorite Grand Theft Auto character because, despite his faults (and there are many), he just wants to break out of the lifestyle he’s stuck in. Whether or not we have a murky past like Niko’s, I believe many of us can connect to the desire to move on from something and live a better life. He’s by far the most well-developed and realistic character in the series, and he’s my favorite playable character for that reason.

The greatest GTA characters listed are why the Grand Theft Auto series has been a chart-topper since its introduction. With each new installment, players are given the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the lives of the characters, learning as much about themselves as they do about the game’s crazy universe. So go out and purchase as many GTA games as you can (most of them are available on Steam for extremely cheap rates), and remember to maintain the high ground!
