The first ever alpha test for Wrecking Crew’s Kingdom of Elyria (KoE) will start next week on July 6th, 2018.
The Kingdom of Elyria is a new game that is still in development, and will be one of the first MMORPG games to use procedural generation for world generation. It is being developed by the team of the same name, who have worked on games like Shroud of the Avatar, Tabula Rasa, and Pathfinder Online. The game is inspired by the works of Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, and other fantasy authors.
Backers of the Kickstarter campaign for Lords of Elyria were some of the first to receive alpha access to the game, and to an extent that has changed the way the game has developed. Players have been demanding more features and functionality for their characters and the game has had to shift towards a more action-oriented combat system. In order to test the new combat system, a new alpha test will start on July 6th and run for three weeks. During this period, you will be able to play Lords of Elyria on a private test server. Your characters will be wiped out upon the conclusion of the test and you can’t save any progress between now and then. When the test is completed, any bugs that were found will be fixed. Hoping for a chance to redeem itself after the cancellation, lawsuit and hasty resurrection, Chronicles of Elyria releases a side game Kingdoms of Elyria, before the long-promised MMORPG is released on Kicksted. For those who have invested a lot of money and trust in Soulbound Studios, it will certainly be important to see what the reformed team has in store for Kingdoms to restore that trust.
We will have to be patient a little longer: Kingdoms of Elyria alpha testing starts next week on the 6th. July, launch. Announced earlier this year after the failure and burnout of Chronicles of Elyria in 2020, Kingdoms of Elyria would be a multiplayer colony simulator, a precursor to a larger MMO.
Don’t expect to hear much about this test, though. Soulbound is holding this early alpha under a strict NDA, and only backers with access to alpha 1 will be able to try it out. The studio said future alpha tests will also be open to alpha 2 backers.
We know the first alpha test won’t be perfect, but it marks an important step and a new approach to development, the studio said.
Chronicles of Elyria stunned MMO players in 2020 when it was announced that the company was running out of money, laying off developers, closing Soulbound Studios, and shutting down development of the game. Although CEO Jeromy Walsh pushed back, saying the game was still in production with volunteers, players who had raised more than $14 million to support the game sued. In 2021 Walsh released new videos about the production which he says is underway, although the focus was on the spin-off game Kingdoms of Elyria.
